Air Filter Regulation Update

At a Glance

  • The air filter rating system has changed.
  • Now rated based on initial performance, not average lifetime performance.
  • Filters previously labeled MERV 4 will now be labeled MERV 1.
  • Product we offer has not

What Changed

A significant regulatory change is now affecting air filter descriptions for multifamily residential products. Manufacturers are now required to label air filters based on their initial performance, not average performance over the filter’s life. As a result, our filters previously labeled MERV 4 are now labeled MERV 1, even though the physical product remains unchanged.

Why the Change?

This update aligns with ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 52.2-2017 and AHRI 680 (I-P)-2017, which define how filters are tested and rated. The change is being driven by California’s Title 20 Appliance Efficiency Regulations. These regulations, combined with federal standards, set minimum efficiency levels for energy and water consumption in products. This air filter related regulation went into effect on July 1, 2024.

What We’re Doing

Chadwell Supply is reviewing all impacted products and updating product specifications so that customers know exactly what they are buying. We are also working with manufacturers to ensure that all product labeling has been properly updated.

Fire Safety Update

UL 217 8th Edition represents the most significant update of manufacturing standards in many years.

  • Smoke or combination alarms manufactured after June 30, 2024, must meet new safety standards.
  • The new standards include improved smoke sensing, earlier warnings, and reduced nuisance alarms.
  • The updates are based on careful study of modern fire hazards and real-world safety concerns, as modern synthetic textiles, furnishings, and building materials burn hotter and faster.
  • Average time to escape in the event of a fire has reduced from 17 to 3 minutes.

Currently installed smoke and combination alarms will continue to offer quality protection through their standard lifespan.
